England v India: hosts remember Dawid Malan, knock out Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley for Test 3

Malan is the world’s number one T20 hitter

Yorkshire batsman Dawid Malan has been called up to England’s squad for Test 3 against India, with Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley both dropped from the 15-man squad.

Malan, 33, played the last of his 15 tests in August 2018.

The Seamer Saqib Mahmood is included, while the spinner Jack Leach is missing, but will be on hold as a backup for Moeen Ali.

England fell to a 151-run loss in the second round, having tied the opener in the five-round series.

The third test will start at Headingley in Leeds on Wednesday 25th August.

Malan has scored 724 Test runs averaging 27.84, including one century and six half centuries.

“Dawid Malan deserves his chance on the proving ground,” England head coach Chris Silverwood said.

“He has a lot of experience in all formats and, if asked, I’m sure he can come and do well in his field.”

Sibley, averaging 28.94 in 22 tests, has struggled against India this summer, scoring just 57 runs in four innings.

“Dom Sibley needs some time to regain his confidence after a challenging period,” Silverwood said.

“He will return to Warwickshire to spend some time in between without the scrutiny and find some rhythm and confidence.

“Dom offers a lot of value to the test environment and a time out should help. However, it is still part of our plans.”

Kent batsman Crawley has 15 test matches and scored 267 against Pakistan in August 2020, but lost his place in the team after the first test against India and will now return to his county as well.

“Zak remains an important part of our plans going forward, but we believe that he would benefit from time away from the pressure of international competition to spend some time working on his ability,” added Silverwood.

“He has a bright future and I have no doubt that his time will come again in the test arena.”

England are also hopeful that Mark Wood will recover from a shoulder injury sustained in the second test, while Mahmood of Lancashire could be in line to make his test debut.

“He’s confident, he’s very skilled, and he won’t be intimidated if he wants to make his tryout debut. His temperament and attitude are suited to the international arena,” Silverwood said of Mahmood.
