David James has defended the fee that Arsenal will pay for Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Ramsdale is in London Colney today to complete a medical examination, before joining the rest of his new Arsenal teammates ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea.

Arsenal fans are unhappy with Ramsdale’s signing, with many suggesting that the £ 24 million plus possible £ 6 million in add-ons is too much for a player in his current position.

But James believes the price is fair for the England international, who played every game for the Blades in the Premier League last season.

When you consider that Sheffield United paid £ 18.5 million for it, that’s a logical assessment. Given that he had a long-term contract, his experience, he is an England goalkeeper, I would suggest that he has a future that Arsenal can use, ” he said.

Ramsdale will compete with German goalkeeper Bernd Leno for the No. 1 spot in the Emirates and Icelandic Runar Alex Runarsson is expected to be the third choice.

James believes the 23-year-old has most of the qualities necessary to be a great Premier League goalkeeper.

“Aaron Ramsdale has all the agility, makes great saves, the only question mark I have about him is the distribution,” he told Sky Sports.

“He can shoot the ball, but they are the finest about playing in midfield. We look at Jordan Pickford, how good he is [at distributing]. If he improves that, he has all the qualities to be Arsenal’s number one for a long period of time. ”

The Gunners are also expected to announce the signing of Norwegian attacking midfielder Martin Odegaard in the next few hours.

Odegaard, who spent the second half of last season on loan to the Gunners, has been their number one priority in that position the entire window and they have finally made a breakthrough in discussions with their current club Real Madrid.
