Manchester United are set to make Paul Pogba the club’s highest paid player with a new five-year contract worth £ 400,000 per week, according to The Athletic.
Pogba has only one year left on his current £ 290,000-a-week contract and United are “desperate” to extend his stay at Old Trafford before the transfer window closes.
However, the French midfielder has yet to accept United’s latest offer: which will see him earn more than David de Gea, who makes £ 375,000 per week.

Pogba’s new contract will also see him beat the salaries of United’s summer contract, Jadon Sancho, who agreed to a five-year contract worth around £ 300,000 a week.
United bosses are eager for Pogba to sign the new deal, which would run for a minimum of four years, with the option to extend it until 2025.
They believe that the significant increase in their wages of £ 290,000 a week will help protect the player’s market value and avoid losing him for free next summer after an outlay of £ 89 million to sign him in 2016.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer desperate to keep the French midfielder at the club
However, as previously reported by Sportsmail, Pogba will take his time to evaluate his options, as a free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain next season remains a possibility.
PSG had been linked to a Pogba move this summer, but Lionel Mesi’s move to Ligue 1 side prevented any deal from happening as the club prioritized the Argentine superstar.
However, as previously reported by SportsmailSince then, PSG have offered Pogba a whopping £ 510,000 a week salary if he joins them for free next summer.
Therefore, Pogba’s new deal will overtake David De Gea, who makes £ 375,000 a week.
Pogba has also been linked to transfers to Real Madrid and Barcelona this summer, but his well-known and publicized financial problems have caused the midfielder to stop moving until he has no contract, allowing him to move without a transfer fee.
Therefore, Pogba is unlikely to put pen to paper with Manchester United before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Aug. 31 as he seeks to evaluate his options.
If United fail to secure his signature, it would be Pogba’s second time away from Old Trafford, having joined Juventus in 2012 when his contract expired.

However, coach Mauricio Pochettino remains interested in bringing Pogba to France next season.
However, Pogba got the new 2021-22 campaign off to a good start on Saturday after playing a pivotal role in United’s 5-1 win over archrival Leeds at Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes walked away with the match ball and Mason Greenwood caught the attention of fans, but it was Pogba who was the star of the show.
The Frenchman recorded four assists during United’s victory, leaving manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to sing the praises of the midfielder after the match.
“Impressive,” Solskjaer said of Pogba’s vision. Paul has always had that vision, he has that quality.

But, Paul, I am also very impressed with his fitness level. He hasn’t been with us long and seems fit, ready to play, enjoying his football.
“I love seeing Paul and all these guys smiling when they play soccer.”
