‘I Officially Received Trikafta’: Ottawa Woman With Cystic Fibrosis Receives Life-saving Medications

OTTAWA – A 23-year-old Ottawa woman with cystic fibrosis received a life-saving drug this week and now vows to continue fighting until every CF patient has it “in their hands.”

Last week, CTV News Ottawa introduced him to Sara Aldrich, who said her private health insurance would not cover the $ 300,000 a year cost for the drug Trikafta. Trikafta is approved for use in Canada, but it is not covered by your private insurance.

In a post on Facebook, Aldrich said that OHIP + notified him last week that his request to cover the cost of the drug had been approved.

“I am almost 24 years old and I realize that starting today, I will not have to live another day in fear of how many days I have left,” Aldrich said in a post Tuesday. “The day has come. I OFFICIALLY RECEIVED TRIKAFTA.”

Cystic Fibrosis Canada called Trikafta “the greatest innovation in the treatment of cystic fibrosis,” adding that it can treat up to 90 percent of Canadians with cystic fibrosis.

“My lung function is the lowest it has ever been and I can’t see it go back up unless I get Trikafta,” Aldrich said last week.

Aldrich was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at a young age and has lived a mostly active life.

“I’ve seen my lung function go from 90 to 40 in 3 years. I’ve been told there are no options left,” Aldrich said on Facebook. “The only thing left that could save me from a life that ends before it has begun is the miracle drug called Trikafta.”

Aldrich says receiving Trikafta begins his journey of “finally being able to achieve all the goals that I have set for myself.”

“As much as I would like to say that this is the best day of my life, the truth is that it is bittersweet. Even though I have the medication that will save people with CF, I still see my brother struggle with the same problems that I have been. trying over the years, “Aldrich said.

“My brother is someone I’ve always looked up to, and to be honest, he deserves this drug more than I do. The harsh reality is that I sit here pleading with the insurance companies to approve this drug for EVERYONE with Cystic Fibrosis. Yes You think I’m done fighting just because I have trikafta, you are wrong. My older brother, my best friend, my hero NEEDS this drug too. As do thousands of others. And I DON’T stop until all CF patients have it on their hands “.
